The quality of a steel structure project is determined from the very first steps in the factory. From raw steel plates, how are columns, beams, and trusses created with perfect precision and load-bearing capacity? The answer lies in a strictly controlled production process, especially in the three foundational stages: steel cutting, assembly, and welding.

1. Steel cutting – The foundation of precision
This is the initial stage, transforming raw steel plates into steel blanks (also known as flanges and webs) with precise shapes and dimensions according to the fabrication drawings. The accuracy of these steps directly affects the entire subsequent production and erection process.
Applied technology
At modern steel structure manufacturing plants like Quyet Thang Factory, automated cutting technology is prioritized:
- CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting: The cutting machine is fully computer-controlled, ensuring that both straight and complex curved cuts achieve near-absolute precision.
- Plasma / Laser cutting: Uses an extremely high-temperature Plasma stream or Laser beam to cut thick steel plates quickly and smoothly, creating sharp edges with minimal burrs.
The role of Quality Control (QC)
After cutting, QC engineers will conduct a 100% inspection of the geometric dimensions of the steel blanks, comparing them with the tolerances allowed in the technical drawings. Any deviations must be addressed to avoid affecting subsequent stages.
2. Assembly – Shaping the “skeleton” of the component
Once standard steel blanks are obtained, the next stage is to position them into the design location to form the shape of the component. For example: Joining three flat steel plates into an I-beam.
- Execution process: The steel blanks (flanges, webs) are placed on a specialized assembly table. Technical workers will adjust and temporarily fix them using tack welds. This stage also includes processing and drilling holes on the component to facilitate future bolt connections at the construction site.
- Technical requirements: The welding process must strictly adhere to the approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), including parameters such as current, welding speed, and electrode type, to ensure the weld meets the required strength.
The role of Quality Control (QC)
This is the most complex QC stage. QC engineers will inspect the weld surface visually and use Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods such as:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Uses ultrasonic waves to detect defects hidden deep inside the weld.
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) or Dye Penetrant Testing (PT): Used to detect microscopic cracks on the weld surface.

Only components that pass all these rigorous tests are moved to the next stages. The combination of modern technology and a strict quality control process in the first three steps is the secret to creating steel structure components that meet both domestic and international standards.
